Netherlands: Emily Asmann (Final Reflections)
As I am approaching the latter half of my time in Amsterdam, I am growing more and more appreciative of this program with every day. The thought of being somewhere with no support system or physical direction was scary, but I am grateful that it did not falter my eagerness to explore the city. Through this exploration I have discovered the depth of the arts in Amsterdam and how Dutch culture enriches this through visibility and accessibility.

The University of Amsterdam’s Humanities program has been so helpful for involving students within Amsterdam’s culture and in connecting them with other students who have similar interests. The most meaningful connections I made were at a gathering for Exchange Humanities students set up by the university at a local live music venue. This program wants students to be involved within the city and to feel like they can embrace the culture here, which is the best feeling to have so far away from home.
My favorite memories looking back will be the discovery of various galleries, cinemas, bookshops, markets, live music venues, and more. Through the passion and diversity of Amsterdam’s culture for the arts, I have been able to uncover so many spaces that I would have looked over. In addition, each cinema, bookshop, and gallery contain a cafe/social space, so we are able to connect with others. I have loved connecting with people in arts-based communities through these cultural centers in Amsterdam that are one of a kind. These spaces, communities, and connections are what I will remember the most from my time abroad. My time studying abroad has been so lovely and meaningful, something that I owe all to the University of Amsterdam and the city of Amsterdam itself.

I chose this program because the city of Amsterdam is one of the best places for art museums and galleries in Europe and I think I will really enjoy the layout of campus. I want to make connections during this program term, personally and professionally, because I want to get more out of my comfort zone.
