Australia: Chloe Hansen (Learning on Excursions)
At James Cook University I took Coral Reef Ecology, a topic that explores the biological structures that influence the existence of Earth’s coral reef systems and the ways they are impacted by climate change. The course is taught by one of the world’s leading coral researchers, and beyond teaching you about ecology, the instructors help you become a better scientist. We learned this by conducting our own coral reef survey on a 3-day field trip to Orpheus Island Research Station, a small island north of Townsville surrounded by infringing reefs and mangroves.

The goal of the field trip was to collect size and structure data about 2 reefs along the shore of the island. To do this, we snorkeled the reefs and used waterproof paper to record their common coral species, which ranged from vibrant, branching staghorn corals to encrusting massive corals. It was the most beautiful field survey I’ve ever done, and it taught me what marine scientists do in their fieldwork.
We processed the data on the island afterwards while drinking tea and eating biscuits. This data was then used to develop a field report theorizing how anthropogenic factors, like mainland agriculture, and hydrodynamic events, like cyclones, can influence which species thrive on these reefs, which helps us better understand the capacity for reef resilience.
This field trip helped us connect course content with real observations of the environment, and helped me build a stronger appreciation for all the Great Barrier Reef does, while giving me the tools to be a better scientist who could eventually help protect this amazing natural resource.

I chose this program because of the access it provides to nature, both in the ocean and on land. I know this will attract people that share my interests, and I am most excited to find that community.
During my program, my goals are to explore Australia’s natural resources and go diving on the Great Barrier Reef. I am also interested in gaining professional experience in marine research, and creating friendships with Australian and international people, who will teach me so many lessons about community and the ways we interact with nature.
