Singapore: Jeffrey Liu (Final Reflections)

At first, I was hesitant to join a study abroad program, even after my mom encouraged me many times. But as the departure date approached and it finally hit me that I was headed to Singapore, I felt both excited and anxious, not sure of what to expect or if I’d fit in. Now, with the semester winding down, I can confidently say that my mom was right as it has been an eye-opening experience.

Over the past months, I’ve felt truly integrated into the National University of Singapore (NUS) community. The warm welcome from the school, exchange buddies, campus clubs, and dorm activities made me feel like part of the university. The locals were also incredibly welcoming, always ready to answer questions and help out, and I’m really grateful for their kindness.
I’m equally thankful for the exchange students I’ve explored Singapore and other parts of Asia with. Together, we balanced “locking in” on our studies with sharing unforgettable experiences. Meeting people from all over the world, I learned a lot about the differences and similarities in our cultures. Looking through our photos, I cannot but just smile at them of all the fun times we had with each other.

This experience has also helped me break out of my shell a bit. I was outgoing back in Madison, but being surrounded by such a diverse mix of cultures here has inspired me to meet even more people. Unexpectedly, I feel I understand myself better now, and it’s something I’ll carry with me far beyond this semester.

I look forward to learn more about the rich history that Singapore has, especially their festivals. I wanted to go to a country I have never been before to make new friends while learning about the different ideologies and cultures there.
