This is a Parrotfish! It is a common fish found on the reefs of Belize. This is the fish I conducted my research project on – specifically their eating habits!

What is your most memorable experience from your program?

The most memorable experience from this program was when my peers and I swam with dolphins! We were conducting research in the atoll when we spotted a family of dolphins nearby. I still recall the excitement I felt when I saw them for myself. It was intimidating to jump in the water with them at first, but I learned how gentle they were. It was such an unforgettable experience!

This program allowed me to go on so many adventures, and I can truly say it was an experience of a lifetime.

What challenges or barriers did you face as you prepared to go abroad and/or during your time abroad? How did you work through them?

I found it challenging to adapt to the amount of physical exertion I engaged in. We snorkeled two to three times a day for multiple hours each session. It was exhausting at first, but I became accustomed to the daily activities quickly, and I learned to enjoy the time we spent in the ocean. I asked my peers and professors for advice, and I learned proper snorkeling techniques that made it easier to swim for long periods.

These are a traditional Belizean food called Fry Jacks! I ate one at almost every breakfast because they are so delicious. I also always enjoyed the fruit too! It was so colorful and ripe!

What is your advice for someone considering your program?

If you are considering this program, be prepared to swim a lot! It is so important that you know when to take a break and find a balance between socializing and taking time for yourself. My biggest piece of advice is to be brave and try new things! This program allowed me to go on so many adventures, and I can truly say it was an experience of a lifetime. I do not know when/if I will get the opportunity to snorkel every day again, which is why I am so grateful to have participated in this program!
