Sustainability in London

Being in London has led to many lifestyle changes, but perhaps the most significant is my approach to sustainability. Back in my hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, I was completely reliant on a car, and used it to go everywhere. However, in London there is an expansive public transport system, and the layout of the city is pedestrian friendly. Due to this, my carbon footprint has decreased significantly, teaching me how easy it is to make an effort and enact change in my personal life. Another aspect of sustainability which is evident in my lifestyle changes is the way that I think about food. Now that I am shopping for myself, I only purchase what is necessary, and if I have any extra left over, I share it with the people who I live with. Due to this, I am effectively reducing food waste, and setting up better habits for myself to carry on when I go back to the US. Outside of the traditional concepts of sustainability, another thing that I have realized is the importance of community. London has an incredibly diverse and widespread population, with a multitude of communities. In order to be actually sustainable, London has shown me that it is essential for these communities to work together and build each other up. Without a collaborative effort, it is likely that sustainability in big cities like London will diminish, having severe negative effects on the city. In all, my time spent in London so far has taught me a lot, and I hope that I will be able to continue the efforts when I go back to the US.
