A Home Away from Home in London
Getting adjusted to life here in London was not an easy feat. Although the city is beautiful, the adjustment from living a quiet small town life to one of the biggest cities was a huge one. This was tremendously enhanced by the fact that this was my first time living by myself, let alone living in a new country. There have been many, many times where I’ve been overwhelmed or stressed, but looking back on my first semester, I have to say I had the best time of my life.
Developing a daily routine that I stick to has been essential for my transition to London. Without my routine, however small the things may be, I feel more grounded and secure in the large city. Every day I like to go to a grocery store: Either Waitrose, Tesco, or Sainsbury’s. I don’t get much every day, but I try to get a beverage or small snack after class. This allows me to reward myself for having a good class or day, or to pick me up if I am feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Another part of my daily routine is going to the gym. This is something that I did every day in the states, and was initially nervous about here. Going to the gym is essential for me to process my day, and it helps me stay calm throughout the day.
A popular, yet classic spot that I will miss dearly in London is Kensington Gardens/Hyde Park. I love walking through the park and looking at the beautiful gardens around me. My favorite part of the Gardens is the pond. I love seeing the birds around it. Additionally, I love being close to the tube station. Being able to get to any part of London with ease is something that I will miss dearly.
Although it is sad thinking about leaving London, I appreciate the time that I have spent while here, and am choosing to live the remaining time soaking in my experience.
