Students wrapping their arms around the trunks of tall trees in a forest.
This was taken on our study week to Helsinki, Finland. We went for a hike through the woods and began literal “tree huggers”. We got to experience the Finnish culture of respecting nature, and our hike ended with a traditional sauna and cold plunge.

How were your program academics similar or different from taking classes at UW-Madison?

My classes at DIS were focused more on application of the material through group discussions and hands-on activities. Contrary to my semesters at UW, I had very little homework and was able to spend time exploring my new city while also being engaged and actively learning in class.

How will your experience benefit you in the future? How might it affect your future career or studies?

My experience abroad has made me confident that I can problem solve any issue that arises in my life. My sense of self efficacy was further developed, and I am no longer afraid of putting myself outside of my comfort zone. I also learned that if you want to accomplish something, put full effort into it even if you have to do it scared.

What is the moment you are most proud of?

I am most proud of finding the self-confidence and assuredness to solo travel two countries for a week. It was a great experience, and I learned how to be content with my own company but also put myself outside of my comfort zone to meet new people.
