India: Cristal Ortiz (A New Experience)

During this program in India during winter intersession, we explored the intersection of sustainability and business, with a focus on how these dynamics play out in emerging economies.

As part of this experience, we visited St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, one of the city’s most prestigious higher education institutions (pictured at left).

Founded in 1869 and rooted in the Jesuit tradition, St. Xavier’s exemplifies an educational model beyond academics. The institution emphasizes Cura Personalis, also known as care for the whole person. Training students not only for professional excellence, but also for personal integration and social inclusion.

With India having the largest youth population in the world and the potential to be a long-term global economic powerhouse, it is clear that education is at the forefront, and investing in the youth will go a long way. During our visit, we received an enriching history lecture from Dr. Avkash Jadhav, who guided us through the transformation of the city that used to be known as Bombay into the present-day city of Mumbai. His insights connected colonial history, urban development, and change, helping us gain a better understanding of the city’s identity and the context in which institutions like St. Xavier’s operate.

What stood out most about St. Xavier’s was how it balances global academic standards with local responsibility. Through community requirements and service – learning programs, students are actively involved in addressing societal challenges. This model highlights how education is central to unlocking India’s democratic advantage and ensuring sustainable, inclusive growth.

I am especially excited that the Wisconsin School of Business will be launching a semester-long study abroad program at St. Xavier’s College starting next fall. This partnership represents a powerful step toward deeper global collaboration and continued cross-cultural learning.

Program Name: UW Global Immersion in International Business in India
Major: Business Administration, Human Resource Management
Hometown: Milwaukee, Wisconsin

I chose this program because of its short timeline and perfect way to actively spend my last winter break before graduation. Immersing myself in India’s rich economy, culture, and efforts on globalization and sustainability will give me a deep understanding of how global forces shape the realities of many, and as a result, I hope it will influence the way I promote change in my community.
