Sweden: Willow Cushman (Daily Life in Alnarp)

Most days start with coffee and a quick breakfast before I head off to the library to get some work done before class. After our late-morning lectures, my friends and I meet up to make lunch together and relax. During the early afternoon, we work on our assignments and readings. If we need a short break from work, we’ll take a walk through the beautiful park on campus or play a quick game of volleyball. On other days, we sit down at the university café and have fika, a traditional Swedish coffee break. After I’m satisfied with how much schoolwork I’ve completed for the day, I’ll bike into town to run errands, do some chores, or work out at the calisthenics park near my house.

Once a week, my friends and I meet up with other students to play innebandy, a type of floor hockey invented in Sweden in the 1960’s. I’m not very good at it, but it has been fun to try out a new sport and socialize with people outside of class. In the evening, my friends and I enjoy hanging out and cooking dinner together. It’s especially fun when we share dishes from our home countries or exchange cooking tips with each other. Before we get ready for bed, we’ll watch a movie or play a game together. Life in Alnarp can be quiet at times, but I’m always learning something new and meeting interesting people!

I chose to attend the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences for its rigorous academics and hands-on learning opportunities.  I hope to visit a few of Sweden’s beautiful national parks and spot some Nordic wildlife.
