England: Norah Doyle (Learning on Excursions)

One of the most memorable and impactful experiences during my time abroad was visiting the city of Bath in England with the program. From the moment I arrived, the city felt like a place where history and storytelling were woven into everyday life.

The highlight of the excursion was exploring the Roman Baths (pictured left), an incredible and well-preserved site that offered a vivid glimpse into ancient Roman society.

Walking along the stone pathways and looking into the baths, I could almost imagine what life was like nearly two thousand years ago. The combination of architecture, engineering, and cultural significance made the experience both fascinating and humbling.

What made the visit even more meaningful was a guided tour focused on the literary and historical background of Bath. As we walked through the city, we learned how it had inspired writers and thinkers for centuries. Hearing stories about how authors once lived, wrote, and socialized in the same streets added a new layer of depth to the experience. It made me realize how a place can shape creativity and influence culture over time.

This excursion stood out because it connected multiple interests of mine, history, literature, and travel, into one immersive experience. It wasn’t just about seeing a landmark; it was about understanding the stories behind it. By the end of the day, I felt a deeper appreciation for how the past continues to shape the present, and I left Bath with a sense of curiosity that extended far beyond the city itself.
