Brazil: Keileen Weberpal (Places: Routine and Favorite)

I cannot believe it is already May; my time in Brazil is quickly approaching its end. While I will miss the friendly atmosphere of Brazilians, I will really miss going to weekly feiras. Feiras are similar to
farmers markets, but typically offer a wider variety of foods to souvenirs.

I tried to buy all of my produce, bread, and seasonings at the ferias. I also had a routine of purchasing a pastel, which is pictured on the left. It’s a pastry most commonly filled with shredded chicken or cheese that is fried, along with a cup of Sugar Cane juice.

Throughout Brazil, I have loved exploring feiras to experiment with new foods and produce. I will miss the ability to purchase tropical fruits to a cup of acai to fresh caught shrimp at any time. While the feiras are great to purchase fresh foods from seafood to produce, I will miss the engaging conversations I always had. Brazilians were always curious what country I am from and would turn this into a “guessing game.” While Brazilians always wanted to guess what country I am from, they also wanted to know more about my life and why I was in Brazil. While having this conversation, I could be invited to join lunch with the people I just met. I love how welcome I always felt, even just with my weekly routine of going to a feira
