What is your most memorable experience from your program? 

The most remarkable experience was visiting Siena, Italy. The medieval architecture, beautiful streets, and rich culture connected to the Contradas and annual horse race were amazing to experience first-hand. Plus, the Duomo was the most beautiful piece of architecture I have ever seen— blending religious iconography, mosaic art and Roman history.

What is the moment you are most proud of?

I am most proud of climbing Mt. Vesuvius. While climbing the steep incline in the face of heat and humidity was daunting, I was so proud of my ability to keep a positive attitude and complete the task anyway. It was absolutely worth it; the panoramic views of Naples and the chance to see inside an active volcano were invaluable.

How did your identities impact your experience? What advice would you give to students with similar identities who are considering a similar experience?

I have lived in the US my entire life, which means I am familiar with the fast-paced and economy-driven lifestyle of our capitalist country. I would advise others to understand that Italy is its own country with its own customs, different from yours. You do not have to like all of them, but you have to respect that they are different and not wrong. Who knows? Maybe you’ll even like something about the way Italians live more than how you are used to living?

What did you learn about yourself or the world because of your experience?

I learned that Italians are some of the kindest and most welcoming people I have met. The people I met made me more welcoming, more patient and more adventurous. Italy also taught me how to slow down—how to enjoy my meals, walk slower and appreciate my surroundings.
